While some countries are still declaring Corona as a state of emergency, others are setting limitations on social gatherings. There is uncertainty over just how long Corona Pandemic will last, and gathering is permitted once again. In 2020 wedding ceremonies, religious events, and all the social events will be different than ever before.
Health measures in social events
Gatherings of all kinds around the world, either they are social, religious or based on entertainment, have been limited. Also, people are required to adopt PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Besides, a physical distancing between attendees is mandatory to those who are not from the same household.
One of the exciting and appreciable thing about COVID-19 is that the gathering rules absolutely became according to Islam. And most surprising is that we are practicing it willingly and happily.
Simple weddings in Islam
There’s no need for a large assembly or congregation in Nikah Ceremony (marriage). For a Muslim marriage to be valid, the groom, two witnesses, the bride’s Walei (guardian) should be there at the time of Nikah, while the bride is not obligated to do so since she has approved the marriage and given consent in the first place.
Indulging in extravagant ceremonies is against Islam. Islam prohibits show off and calls for simplicity. In fact, when we reflect on the suffering of Muslims and humans around the globe, we see a significant amount of spending on ceremonies. Imagine spending some of your wedding budgets to save the oppressed or feed those who require it.
The prophet Muhammad(PBUH), our role model, has called for simplicity in ceremonies where a Walima is offered for attendees with whatever food is available and affordable without burdening any member. He discouraged lavish spending on wedding ceremonies when the money could be spent more wisely to benefit the couple and the community.
Such simplicity in Muslim marriages encourages youth to marry instead of delaying their marriage due to incompetency to catch up with today’s excessive marriage requirements. In lieu of boosting marriages, according to the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW),
“When someone with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks to marry your daughter, comply with his request. If you do not do so, there will be corruption and great evil on earth. ”(Tirmidhi)
And for men, there is another Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW),
“A woman is normally sought as a wife for her wealth, beauty, nobility, or religiousness (adherence to Islam), but choose a religious woman and you will prosper. ”(Muslim)
Corona Pandemic and wedding trends
This pandemic has urged people to get creative about celebrating one of their most memorable days. Some couples have planned a virtual wedding where they can share their ceremony with their family and friends on live streaming apps.
While others have chosen to hold a simple outdoor wedding to follow health protection orders and gathering limitations.
A memorable wedding has been held in Halifax, Canada, where friends and family decorated their cars and drove around the city in a parade to celebrate. Then they stopped at specific locations to take photos with the bride and groom while in their vehicles.
These simple celebrations hold the essence of marriage by tying the knot with those who matter without holding extravagant ceremonies that break the bank.
