Some countries are declaring Corona as a state of emergency. Some are setting limitations on social gatherings. There is uncertainty over Corona Pandemic. The gathering is permitted once again. In 2020 wedding ceremonies will be different.

Health measures:

Gatherings of all kinds around the world have been limited. Also, people are required to adopt PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Besides, physical distancing is mandatory.

One thing about COVID-19 is that the rules became according to Islam. And most surprising is that we are practicing it happily.

Simple weddings in Islam

There’s no need for a large assembly in Nikah Ceremony (marriage). For a Muslim marriage to be valid. The groom, two witnesses, the bride’s Wali should be there at the time of Nikah. The bride is not obligated to do so. Since she has given consent.

Islam prohibits show off and calls for simplicity. In fact, when we reflect on the suffering of humans. We see a significant amount of spending. Imagine spending some of your budgets to save the oppressed.

The prophet Muhammad(PBUH), has called for simplicity where a Walima is offered. Food is available and affordable without burdening. He discouraged lavish spending on weddings. Instead, the money could be spent wisely.

Simplicity in Muslim marriages encourages youth to marry. Instead of delaying their marriage due to incompetency. In lieu of boosting marriages, the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) is:

“When someone with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks to marry your daughter, comply with his request. If you do not do so, there will be corruption and great evil on earth. ”

(Tirmidhi)

And for men, another Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW),

“A woman is normally sought as a wife for her wealth, beauty, nobility, or religiousness, but choose a religious woman and you will prosper. ”

(Muslim)

This pandemic has urged people to get creative. Some couples have planned a virtual wedding where they can share their ceremony on live streaming apps. 

While others have chosen to hold a simple outdoor wedding to follow health protection orders.

A memorable wedding has been held in Halifax, Canada, where friends and family decorated their cars. and drove around the city to celebrate. Then they stopped at specific locations to take photos.

These simple celebrations hold the essence of marriage. Without extravagant ceremonies that break the bank.
