Islam has enjoined the husband’s duties towards his wife and vice versa. And among these duties and rights are some which are shared by both husband and wife. I will mention here with the help of Allah and with some of the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah. which has to do with the responsibilities of the spouses towards each other.

The wife has financial rights towards her husband e.g. the mahr (dowry), expenditure, and housing. She has non-financial rights, such as the equal division between two wives, should be behaved well and in a reasonable manner. And should not be treated in a harmful way by her husband.

The mahr is the money to which the wife is entitled from her husband when the marriage contract is completed. So, It is a right which the man is indebted to pay to the woman. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And give to the women (whom you marry) their Mahr (obligatory bridal-money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) with a good heart.” [al-Nisaa’ 4:4]

So, The recommendation of the mahr illustrates the seriousness of the marriage contract. Because it is also considered as a matter of respect and honor to the woman.

From the Sunnah:

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

Be kind to women.(al-Bukhaari, 3153; Muslim, 1468).
