In Islam the marriage is not just a financial and physical arrangement of living together but it’s a blessed contract between husband and wife, to lead a happy, enjoyable life and continue the family. The main goal of marriage in Islam is the realization of self-possession and compassion between the spouses. For this goal Islam defined certain duties and rights for the husband and wife.

The main duty (duties) of the wife as a partner in a marital relationship is to contribute the success and blissfulness of the marriage as much as possible. She must be attentive to the comfort and well being of her mate. The wife’s major duties is to have patience she may neither offend him or nor hurt his feelings.

The Quran says:

“Our Lord! Grant unto us wives and offspring who will be the joy and the comfort of our eyes, and guide us to be models of righteousness.” (Al-Furqan: 74)

Husband Duties:

Islam has assigned both men and women certain duties, responsibilities and rights, according to their nature. All the financial responsibilities of the household are the responsibility of the man. Even if his wife is millionaire, she is not required to spend a penny of it on the household, if she does not wish to. It is not in duty (duties) of women to bring food for her; it’s one of husband’s duty (duties) to provide her food, clothing and shelter according to his means.

ALLAH says in the Holy Quran:

Men are the managers of the affairs of women because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because men spend of their wealth on women.  Virtuous women are, therefore, obedient (to their husband); and they guard in his absence what Allah would have them guard (their honor, their property, etc.) Chapter 4 Surah Nisaa verse 34

According to above aayat of the Holy Quran , the duties of the wife to her husband are that she is obedient to her husband, and she guards in his absence his property, his honor etc.

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said in an authentic narration:

‘The whole world is a provision (from Allah), and the best of provisions is a righteous wife.”

Therefore wife’s duty (duties) as a good wife is to obey her husband with love and affection. and not to leave her husband to choose for liberty and freedom like she was before marriage and not to pretend that marriage is like a prison.

Hadith says:

“If a husband says to his wife to transform a yellow mountain into a black one or turn a black mountain into a white one, she should obey his orders”.

This hadith means that the women should try to perform the hardest of the hard job assigned by her husband.
