Marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman. “Till death does us part,” they say. However, death is not necessarily the end of the husband-wife relationship. In Islam, there is evidence in the Qur’an to indicate that the husband-wife, if they are both on the righteous, will be reunited in Jannah.

Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an,

“Gardens of perpetual residence; they will enter them with whoever were righteous among their fathers, their spouses and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, [saying].”Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home.” (13:23-24).

Here, Allah (SWT) is saying that He will reunite the good family members in Paradise as a reward for their patience in the Duniya. “Righteousness” mentioned here means their faith in Allah and their obedience to His commands and the commands of the Messenger of Allah (SAW).

Furthermore, in Surah Yaseen Allah (SWT) says,

“They and their spouses – in shade, reclining on adorned couches” (36:56) and in Surah Al-Zukhruf, “Enter Paradise, you and your wives, in happiness” (43:70).

Parents with Children in Paradise:

The Mercy of Allah (SWT) is genuinely infinite as He promised that if the believer’s offspring follow them in faith, they will be joined with their fathers in Paradise also if they did not reach that level. So, The parents have the joy of seeing their children in Paradise with them. Allah (SWT) says,

“And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith – We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained” (52:21).

Marriage an Everlasting Relationship:

And the bond of marriage in Islam does not necessarily end with death. Indeed, this brings peace to the heart of a believer who has lost his/her spouse. From this question we can also remind ourselves of the importance of marrying a person who has a strong deen for that is the most important thing one can possess. Our beloved Prophet (SAW) said,

“A woman is married for four things: for her wealth, for her lineage, for her beauty or for her piety. Select the pious, may you be blessed!” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

The Prophet (SAW) in this hadith emphasized piety as the most important characteristic one should look for in a spouse for it leads to blessings in the marriage. Think about it, a pious spouse will be a holy father/mother and raises obedient children. And we know that an obedient child is a form of ongoing charity (sadaqah) for others.

So, In this way, the righteous husband-wife will be together in Jannah InshaAllah. So if you are married and are reading this, one of the goals of marriage should be to motivate each other to achieve Jannah so that your bond of friendship never breaks. That, right there, is what I would call, “true love.”

May Allah (SWT) reunite us with our loved ones in Jannatul Firdaws. Ameen.
